The Air Force airlifted the remains of 72 Americans that had been buried in an Italian military cemetery near the former Wheelus Air Base in Libya from 35 to 50 years ago. A USAF release says the remains are believed to be family members of airmen once stationed at Wheelus, which served as a B-52 bomber base from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. The Libyan government “was very helpful in facilitating this humanitarian effort,” said the statement.
