Nuclear Oversight Board Meets at Minot

Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James and Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh gathered at Minot AFB, N.D., with senior officials from across the service’s nuclear enterprise for a quarterly meeting of the Air Force’s Nuclear Oversight Board, according to a base release. “We are here at Minot to get a first-hand perspective,” said James of the board’s Feb. 20 meeting. The panel members toured the base’s bomber and ICBM operations, including visiting a B-52 hangar, the bomber flight line, and Minuteman III missile alert facilities. While they saw aging equipment and infrastructure in need of upgrade, they also witnessed recent improvements like new gear for security forces airmen and an overall increase in base personnel, states the release. Hosting the board meeting allowed the senior leaders to “see how the ongoing changes to the nuclear enterprise have improved both airmen’s ability to do the mission and quality of life for them and their families,” said Lt. Gen. Stephen Wilson, head of Air Force Global Strike Command. (For background on the NOB, read Nuclear Oversight Board Convenes.)
